Sergey Gritsak

  Cover painting: New Folsom Bridge

Sergey Gritsak was born in the Ukraine in 1969. Painting was treasured in his family for generations. And, no one was surprised that Sergey preferred to draw and paint than participate in activities with children his age. Throughout his early childhood, he developed his art skills and was considered the best artist in his school. While serving two years in the Soviet military, he designed and painted murals and posters. After Military service Sergey devoted himself to painting and became a permanent member of an art exhibition in Lvov, Ukraine. He soon was a full-time artist as many tourists and locals favored his oil paintings.

In 1994 Sergey and his young family immigrated to the United States. In his new environment he continued his painting. To improve his skills, he took oil painting and other art classes in Sacramento City College. He learned new techniques and styles and discovered he was quite adept at working with pastels. Sergey masterfully captures landscapes with trees reflected in the water along the American River. He fell in love with the scenery of the American River and the High Sierras. He paints images of the local beauty that are part of the Sacramento region, in both pastels and oils. His favorite subjects are landscapes with sunlight casting shadows of trees and bridges reflecting in the water of the American River and duck ponds in nearby parks. He prefers local areas and believes that it is not necessary to travel far to find something beautiful. "Beauty is always around us, we just need to be able to see it," says Sergey. That is why his paintings are easily recognizable local scenes.

Over the last five years, Sergey's work has been on display at the Helen Jones Gallery in Town & Country Village. Helen Jones has helped promote Sergey's art career by holding several artist's exhibits of his work.
