Irene Lester is a native to rural California.
Her love of painting began more than 30
years ago. Lester is a member of the Pastel
Society of the West Coast, a signature
member of the Sierra Pastel Society and
an accomplished teacher at The School
of Light and Color in Fair Oaks, California.
Her first public showing was in a juried
show in 1978.
Lester enjoys painting animals,
still life and more recently "plein air"
or outdoor landscapes. "One must paint
quickly and small" she explains, "because
as the sun moves, so also do the shadows,
and the color of everything often changes
a great deal."
Lester takes her small
outdoor studies and later develops them
into larger, detailed paintings in her
studio. She says she hopes "that her love
for the out of doors will come through
to the viewer." Such was apparently the
case with the judges who awarded her work
entitled "Poppies on the Hill" the cover
of this year's Roseville Directory for
SureWest. The pastel depicts a scene of
a hillside near Lake Natomas. Lester's
commitment is evident by her involvement
with The School of Light and Color. One
of several practicing instructors, Lester
offers pastel and landscape workshops
and classes. The in depth artistic instruction
is both in-studio and outdoors. Adult
class offerings include drawing, watercolor,
color mixing and theory, pastel, painting
and landscape. There are also classes
for youth, ages 8-18.
Lester comments on the satisfaction
of having been chosen for the Directory
cover: "This type of recognition is a
validation of one's work and is extremely
exciting to know that so many people will
be seeing my pastel on the directory cover."
